The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) is partnering with The Johnny Mercer Foundation to implement musical theater residencies in local schools during the school year.
The program serves tier one middle schools located in Newark, East Orange and Jersey City. The program reaches approximately 100 students.
Beginning February 2015, each residency will meet twice a week for 20 sessions. They will be studying topics such as:
• The diverse history of the American Musical
• Lyric writing
• The rehearsal and performance process
Students will focus on developing their own creativity, self-confidence and ability to tell their own story through the medium of the American Musical. Residencies are in accordance with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, taught by NJPAC Teaching Artists. The program will culminate with each school sharing a performance of their work at NJPAC. This brand new curriculum is based on the Erin Layton/Georgia State University curriculum supported by The Johnny Mercer Foundation.
